Project Information

As the tourism sector in Sri Lanka grows, the demand for quality service by the hospitality sector in the country increases. The hotel industry is the fourth largest foreign exchange earner in the country, with 80% of those employed in the tourism sector working in hotels and restaurants[1]. This sector will play a pivotal role in the tourism sector, and skilled human resources are important.

Youth unemployment is highest at 20.8 percent among 15-24 year olds, while women’s labour force participation in the country stands at 35.9 percent[2]. Given the demand for human resources in the hotel sector, finding employment for youth and women should not be difficult, but labour shortages within this sector persist.

For many youth and women, there seems to be distinct barriers that exist, preventing them from entering this sector to gain employment. Women account for only 10 percent of those employed in the tourism sector[3], with the majority employed being men. Skills mismatch, cultural norms, traditions and perceptions of the sector have created barriers for women and youth’s entry into this growing sector.

With financing from Diageo’s Plan W initiative that focuses on empowering 1 million women, Chrysalis is conducting research to understand the barriers that exist for women and youth to enter this sector, and reasons for a labour shortage in this industry.
