Rebuilding Safety and Hope: Community Solidarity and Housing Support in Mahakumbukkadawala

Ms. Dhamika Priyanthi aged 56 is a separated wife who lives with her daughter (14) and mother (77) who is seventy-seven years old. She stays at Mahasembukuliya GN division in Mahakumbukkadawala DS division. She married 16 years before and the husband who was an alcoholic addict did not come home and his whereabouts are not known.

Dhamika works as a laborer at Salten which produces salt and pays her one thousand two hundred Rupees per day. She has to bear all family expenses for food, schooling expenses, and medical expenses from the little earnings. but it is not sufficient to cover their all expenses and other needs and wants.

The daughter is still schooling and comes home to the grandmother who takes care of her. If the grandmother isn’t available Ms. Priyanthi would not be able to go to work. Dammika has to think more about her daughter's protection. The house is incomplete where she lives now and not safe and roof is leaking in the rainy days.

Ms, Dhamika received a cash grant of twenty thousand rupees which she spent on buying raw materials for her house. All the villagers and surrounding Nabors helped Dammika to build a new house and were able to complete it up to the lintel level. Roofing materials were ready but she was not able to complete the wall up to roof level.

During the period DS appointed a committee in the village to find out suitable family for a cash grant project sponsored by Chrysalis. She was also selected as a beneficiary for the program. She received 20000 rupees from the Chrysalis as a grant and used part of the money to build the house up to the rooftop level. Then neighbors complete the roofing work. Not only the wall she managed to buy two new doors to the house using this grant. Carpenter fixed it with the help of the neighbors. Ms. Dhamika stated that the community where she lives helps their family in building the house.

Before moving into this new place, the whole family had to undergo severe difficulty. Unexpected rains made their life miserable. ‘The flood water gushed in and the family were stranded. their temporary house was not safe and very limited space for these three women.

This cash grant has given them hope that their future is safe and Chrysali's timely intervention has given her some consolation. If not for Chrysalis it wouldn’t been possible to complete at that time. Moving into the new house also benefits the daughter very much. After school, she is alone by herself while Ms. Dhamika is working. .

Protection is another added advantage that this project has contributed to them. they have now a safe house with educated space and protection. Even during the rainy season, they can stay safely. Little daughter gets a better safer place to live than before. Global Buddhist Relief has contributed to completing houses with new hopes through Chrysalis.
